After a two-year long battle over one of the largest corporate takeovers in Canada’s history, Rogers Communications Inc. has been granted permission by the Canadian government to acquire its rival, Shaw Communications Inc.

Industry Minister François-Philippe Champagne is expected to make an announcement regarding several measures to enhance competitiveness in the telecommunications industry during a news conference in Ottawa on Friday morning.

As part of these measures, Quebecor Inc.’s purchase of most of Shaw’s wireless business will also be approved, according to an anonymous source with knowledge of the matter. This approval is the last requirement that Rogers needed to fulfill before finalizing the Shaw transaction.
